TREATED LUMBER |
BLUWOOD MOLD INHIBITORS |
 |
|
|
|
BluWood is the name given a family of wood frame
building components with a factory applied, proprietary two-part coating technology designed to protect the superstructure of a wood frame building from the damaging effects attributed to mold fungus growth;
rot fungi and wood ingesting insects; while also limiting moisture absorption. Cook County Lumber is a proud distributor of BluWood.
Product Technology
The first part of this technology is an Infusion-Film that forms a water-repellent semi vapor permeable film interlocking with the wood fibers to provide controlled topical and subsurface moisture absorption.
The Infusion Film is also specially formulated to resist mold fungus growth on the cured surface of the film.
The second part of this technology is the Perfect Barrier DOT Wood Preservative, an EPA registered proven fungicide and insecticide that provides protection from rot fungi and wood ingesting insects, including
Formosan termites.
Workability
BluWood components:
- Are handled, nailed, sawed, painted, and adhered the same as untreated wood components.
- Are not structurally or dimensionally impacted by the coating process.
- Are non-corrosive to metal fasteners/plates.
- Do not affect lateral resistance (holding capability) of plates and fasteners.
- Contribute no additional gassing or odor to wood components.
- Do not add to the flame spread properties of untreated wood.
- Do not appreciably add to the smoke density properties of untreated wood.
- Protect building components from uncontrollable moisture absorption before and during construction, as well as after the structure is completed.
- Are surface conditioned for resistance to twisting, cupping, splitting and other dimensional changes due to moisture absorption.
- Can also be exposed to harsh environmental job-site conditions for up to six months.
- Can be disposed of in local landfills, commercially or industrially burned upon approval according to federal, state and local regulations.
- BluWood is listed in the GreenSpec™ Directory and qualifies for use in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) structures.
- Lifetime Limited Transferable Warranty.
Today's standard building code requirements only specify a very small amount of lumber used in the home to be treated against rot fungi and wood ingesting insects. BluWood provides the proactive builder
the ability to have all of the above ground wood framing components protected against the damaging effects of rot fungi and wood ingesting insects; mold fungus growth*; as well as limiting uncontrollable
moisture absorption.

DRICON® FIRE RETARDANT TREATED WOOD |
 |
|
|
|
Cook County Lumber is now the distributor for Dricon® FRT wood. No other fire retardant product, treated or untreated, can match Dricon® fire retardant treated (FRT) wood’s long-term track record for effectiveness. In fact, Dricon® offers superior performance in thousands of applications conducted under the most challenging conditions. Pressurized with an original, patented fire retardant, Dricon® remains stable in the highest temperature environments. And it’s the only FRT wood product on the market today that is backed by a 40-year warranty. Dricon® FRT wood is pressure-treated lumber and plywood that is chemically treated to reduce the spread of flames and generation of smoke.
Dricon® Can Take the Heat
Wood treated with Dricon® reduces flame spread and smoke development and its ability to maintain its structural strength in a fire is enhanced. Although other fire retardant wood products and laminates are available, some suffer from heat degradation problems. Furthermore, laminates treated on only one side of the sheet do not offer thorough protection from heat spread and combustion.
Water is No Sweat
Unlike similar products, Dricon® does not pick up excessive moisture, even at a relative humidity of 95%. Tests show that Dricon® is no more corrosive than untreated wood, even when the relative humidity reaches 100%.
Trial by Fire
Each piece of Dricon® is marked with an ink stamp or paper label bearing classification mark of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., (UL). It shows that Dricon® has been kiln dried after treatment and qualifies as an Interior Type A, low hygroscopic product. Dricon® was the first product of its kind to be issued a national code compliance report for fire retardancy and structural durability. The use of Dricon® wood can reduce insurance premiums in many applications.
Where the Wood Works
Dricon® provides greater design latitude than conventional noncombustible materials such as masonry or steel. Architects, engineers and contractors are putting Dricon® in use in:
- Indoor construction staging, scaffold and workman’s shanties
- Studs, wallplates and firestops
- Roof systems including decks, purlins and joists
- Air return plenum framing in HVAC systems
- Elevator shafts
- Interior siding and millwork areas where sprinkler systems cannon be installed
- Anywhere other materials would permit a fire to ignite and spread
Environmentally Friendly
The chemicals used in Dricon® wood are of very low toxicity and will not harm anyone who works with it. Tests have shown that smoke from Dricon® is no more toxic than smoke from untreated wood. Naturally, normal safety precautions for working with any wood should be followed. This means gloves, dust masks, and eye protection. Ingestion tests have demonstrated that extreme amounts of wood would have to be ingested before chemical exposure becomes significant.
Finishing
A light sanding and thorough wiping should be performed prior to the application of any finish. Stains, sealers, varnishes, and paints can be used on Dricon®. Paints can be either water based or oil based; stains should be solvent-based to avoid possible surface crystallization of the fire retardant chemical. Dricon® does not adversely affect the performance of nonstructural constructive adhesives, mastics or contact cements. Using carbide tipped saw blades and hot dipped galvanized steel fasteners is recommended.
